This course is for multi-agency operational staff and managers who are in regular contact or carry out direct work with children, young people and/or their parents or carers, and who have a requirement to learn more about child protection for their role. This course is suitable for staff who have not previously completed this training as it is not refresher training.
This training is rated Specific Workforce - Level 3 and offers more in-depth training for the specific workforce who have a specific front facing role in working with children and adults. This also applies to supervisors. Level two training will include roles, responsibilities, assessment of risk and harm, processes, and procedures.
Level 3 training includes all staff who, as part of their role, work directly with children or adults or families. People in this workforce group are likely to require a PVG and to:
Routinely work closely with children or adults or families, including supporting learning, health, practical or skill development
Keep routine records, write reports and/or assessments for multi-agency protection meetings, participate in protection support plans
Contribute to single agency recording and chronologies
Contribute to generic or specific risk assessments
Contribute to identifying and implementing appropriate support/intervention plans
Attend and contribute to formal protection or risk management meetings. Key learning is the same as the Wider and General Workforces, with additional expectations of:
Advocate (helping someone to express their views, or expressing their views on their behalf).
Are there any pre-requisites for attending this course?
Applicants must have previously completed Level 2 Child Protection Awareness Raising and Response training (either through Learnpro, or a virtual or face-to-face session). In advance of attending the course, you should ensure you are familiar with Edinburgh and the Lothians Multi-agency Child Protection Procedures.
What are the learning outcomes?
To understand the national and local policy and legislative context for child protection.
To describe the roles of agencies involved in child protection.
To become familiar with the key processes and procedures (including inter-agency referral discussions, case conferences and referral to the Children’s Reporter).
To explain concepts of risk assessment and child protection planning.
How will the training be delivered?
The training will be delivered on a multi-agency basis by professionals from Police, Health, Education and Social Work and the Child Protection Lead Officer.
