VCEL provides a Training and Events calendar that lists training on Third Sector and community issues from recognised providers across Scotland. But for busy people, sometimes it’s easier to learn at a time that suits you. This page gives you information about courses and qualifications that you can engage with at any time.

Business Gateway East Lothian

Business Gateway East Lothian provides expert support and guidance to new and existing businesses, including social enterprises and community interest companies. They offer webinars on:

  • communications and marketing (including digital)

  • web sites

  • writing funding applications

  • business finance

  • operational matters

  • and much, much more!

East and Midlothian Public Protection Committee - Child and Public Protection training

East Lothian Council has agreed that going forward, third sector staff can access the modules on an individual basis, by emailing the EMPPO Mailbox at emppo@eastlothian.gov.uk, requesting a link to the Child Protection and Public Protection Level 1 modules. Please fill in the required form by clicking on the button below.

Caring for Children Moving Alone: Protecting Unaccompanied and Separated Children - learn about how to support unaccompanied and separated refugee and migrant children. Free training, recommended by East and Midlothian Public Protection Committee.

Governance Wiki

The GovernanceWiki is a free open resource for voluntary organisations and social enterprises operating in Scotland and people working with them. We aim for the Wiki to be a source of trusted, reliable and considered information.

This resource will give you information on the many topics that will help you to run an organisation effectively with good governance in mind. We link and signpost to external resources both within the third sector and beyond, as well as give good basic descriptions of the tools, approaches and resources you need.

Just Enterprise

Just Enterprise offer a range of fully funded E-Learning programmes, designed specifically for social enterprises.

The courses comprise short, focused modules so you can choose the ones that are most relevant to you and your organisation.

Open University

The free online course, Working in the voluntary sector, will introduce you to some of the main activities carried out by volunteers and staff, will give you some background on how different organisations work and will provide you with knowledge and skills you can apply to your own work or volunteering, as well as to your every day life. Suitable for people working in the voluntary sector and volunteers.

Third Sector Human Rights and Equalities (THRE)

Thre want to ensure that human rights and equalities are at the heart of Scotland’s third sector and everything we all do. They offer a range of e-learning opportunities and webinars that you can do at your own pace.

Turas National Trauma Transformation Programme

Trauma is ‘everyone’s business’ and every member of the Scottish Workforce has a role to play in understanding and responding to people affected by trauma. This means that we all have a unique and essential trauma informed role to play in responding to people who are affected by trauma. You can learn more and complete up to four trauma-informed practice learning modules by setting up a Turas account (which is free) and then accessing the training on the National Trauma Transformation Programme page. This training is also free.

TSI Learning Portal

The TSI Learning Portal provides access to courses and resources for community groups, voluntary organisations and social enterprises across Scotland. It is very relevant for board and committee members with an eye to sustainability and good practice. Coordinated by local Third Sector Interfaces (TSIs), the portal offers training and learning tools for staff and volunteers. Here are some of the courses on offer.

Volunteer Scotland

Volunteer Scotland is keen to increase our knowledge about Volunteer Practice - it’s their thing! They offer a range of Training and Workshops, designed to help you make a positive impact on your volunteer programme and on the volunteers who freely give their time and expertise. These include:

  • Open University Courses – Free to access any time and therefore have no start/end date or time

  • Quality Standard Workshops – Free, 2 hour online workshops
