Melanie' Story
My name is Melanie Kay and I started volunteering with Beach Wheelchairs 6 years ago. Alison Brown, the founder and chair set up a steering group and I knew it was something I would love to be involved in. I have a son who is a wheelchair user so knew all to well the challenges and barriers that existed when trying to access the Beach.
When you assist a customer onto the beach with one of our especially adapted chairs, the sheer joy on the their face and the individuals that join them is so heart warming. It is an honour and privilege to be part of this Beach Wheelchair team and make our beautiful beaches accessible to all.
Being a volunteer and juggling my own personal commitments can sometimes be challenging but working with such a fantastic team allows you to have the space when needed.
For anybody thinking of volunteering I would say go for it. Being part of a diverse team, knowing you are making a difference and having a positive impact on peoples lives makes it so worth while.
