East Lothian works are running a further 2 x Construction Academy Courses in partnership with Edinburgh College.

 

ELW Construction Academy

Summary & Purpose:

‘Introduction to construction’ provision targeted at adults (aged 16+) who have a desire to work within the field of construction but currently have no, or limited experience, qualifications and know-how to do this.

This course will provide participants with an opportunity to gain hands on practical skills and accreditation that are considered as the basic minimum requirements to access entry level jobs within construction.

 

Content:

Delivered over 8 weeks, participants will:

 

With Edinburgh College, complete a hands-on practical session based on the following the following trade areas:

Week 1 - Bricklaying

Week 2 – Joinery

Week 3 – Plastering

Week 4 – Painting

Week 5 – Wall/Floor tiling

Week 6 – Roofing

Week 7 – Discretional session: Trade theme chosen by the participants

Week 8 - Discretional session: Trade theme chosen by the participants

 

These sessions will take place on a Monday, 9.30am – 3.30pm at Wallyford Learning Campus (Mason’s Way, Wallyford, EH21 8BF aka Rosehill High School)

 

With East Lothian Works participants will complete a series of employability related tasks, including:

  • Action planning and skills assessment

  • Career guidance (related to construction/the world of work)

  • Signposting to any labour market initiatives

  • Job searching / job matching

  • CV building and cover letter writing

  • Interview prep & mock interviews

 

In addition to this, participants will be given an opportunity to obtain their CSCS green card.  

 

These sessions will take place on a Wednesday, 1.30pm – 3.30pm from MECLC (Musselburgh East Community Learning Centre, Haddington Rd, EH21 8JJ)

  • Pre-course induction session at Wallyford Learning Campus on Mon 13/11

  • Week 1 - Mon 20/11 & Wed 22/11

  • Week 2 – Mon 27/11 & Wed 29/11

  • Week 3 – Mon 04/12 & Wed 06/12

  • Week 4 – Mon 11/12 & Wed 13/12

  • Week 5 – Mon 18/12 & Wed 20/12

  • No session Mon 25/12 & Wed 27/12 – Christmas holiday

  • No session Mon 01/01 & Wed 03/01 – Christmas holiday

  • Week 6 – Mon 08/01 & Wed 10/01

  • Week 7 – Mon 15/01 & Wed 17/01

  • Week 8 – Mon 22/01 & Wed 24/01

They will then break until after the February holiday and commence a new group on the following dates:

  • Pre-course induction session at Wallyford Learning Campus on Mon 19/02

  • Week 1 – Mon 26/02 & Wed 28/02

  • Week 2 – Mon 04/03 & Wed 06/03

  • Week 3 – Mon 11/03 & Wed 13/03

  • Week 4 – Mon 18/03 & Wed 20/03

  • Week 5 – Mon 25/03 & Wed 27/03

  • No session Mon 01/04 & Wed 03/04 – Easter holiday

  • No session Mon 08/04 & Wed 10/04 – Easter holiday

  • Week 6 – Mon 15/04 & Wed 17/04

  • Week 7 – Mon 22/04 & Wed 24/04

  • Week 8 – Mon 29/04 & Wed 01/05

 

How to make a referral  

To make a referral, at this stage all they require is a note of interest including your name, DOB & a contact number emailed to atufail@eastlothian.gov.uk.

If you would prefer to complete an ELW referral form this is also acceptable, but please do detail on the referral form that you intends to attend the Adult Construction Academy.
