VOLUNTEERING

Youth Volunteering

The Young People in Scotland survey found that volunteer participation amongst young people has declined, and that fewer young people are experiencing the benefits of volunteering. These are concerning developments which require a concerted policy response. The survey also highlighted some interesting changes in volunteer participation by demographic group which could help to inform efforts to make volunteering more inclusive for young people.

National Lottery Community Fund Launches New Strategy
The new strategy will cover the next seven years (2023 to 2030) with plans to invest more money in grassroots projects across the UK starting this year. In what is being characterised as ’the biggest change in National Lottery funding for a generation’, the UK’s largest community funder has announced that it will double the amount of funding available to grassroots projects. With the aim of strengthening society by creating resilient communities that are more inclusive and sustainable, National Lottery Community Fund (NLCF) has released its seven-year strategy, “It starts with community”. During this period, it is expected that at least £4 billion of lottery funding will be distributed across the UK.
The strategy was formed over a year-long process comprising 18,000 interactions with people and organisations and focuses on four key missions. These are to support communities to:

  • Connect. Support communities to come together.

  • Be environmentally sustainable.

  • Help children and young people to access resources and experiences that help them thrive.

  • Enable people to live healthier lives.

At the core of the strategy are the following principles, which will guide funding decisions and ways of working:

  • An equity-based approach to tackle inequality.

  • Supporting communities to build from their strengths.

  • Supporting what matters most to different communities.

The new strategy will see an increase in funding:

  • Awards for All – the maximum grant is being raised from £10,000 to £20,000 covering two years (currently one year).

  • A new £15 million programme is expected to open for applications ‘around August’ that will connect communities.

  • An additional £9 million will go to support the Climate Action Fund.  MORE INFO

Funding to Address Food Insecurity and Social Isolation in Scotland
Small grassroots community organisations can apply now for a grant to help them in their work next winter to support those facing social isolation and food insecurity in Scotland. Administered by Foundation Scotland, the Baillie Gifford Grants Programme is funded by Baillie Gifford, an investment management firm based in Scotland. The fund aims to support small local organisations working to address food insecurity and social isolation. Priority will go to projects benefitting the most vulnerable groups, including children and families on low incomes, veterans, people with disabilities and long-term health conditions and those affected by homelessness. The programme welcomes applications which:

  • Help people to access nutritious food, especially for those on a limited budget, and projects which help people to learn about low-cost meal solutions, to limit food waste and shop smartly.

  • Provide services and activities which reduce social isolation, including encouraging re-engagement with community activity following the pandemic. MORE INFO

TAKE PART IN OUR SURVEY

State of Caring 2023 survey is now live!
State of Caring is the most comprehensive research into the experience of carers in Scotland. They use what unpaid carers tell them to shape campaigns and make sure carers’ voices are heard by both Governments and policy makers.
Last year, over 2,000 carers in Scotland and 13,000 across the UK shared their experiences in the survey. This helped secure new rights for leave from work for unpaid carers with the Carer’s Leave Act and also provided vital evidence to help campaign for improvements to carers’ benefits and other supports..
But much more still needs to be done to get carers the practical and financial support they need.
We want to hear what carers’ priorities are, the challenges they are facing and what support they need. Please have your say at:
