LOCAL & NATIONAL GOVERNMENT

Scottish Government: Students experiencing hardship over summer as a result of coronavirus (COVID-19) can apply for financial support if they are struggling to meet accommodation and other costs. STUDENTS

Vaccine: People over 40 whose second coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccination appointment is scheduled more than eight weeks after their first are being encouraged to seek an earlier slot. A new vaccine journey tool on the NHS Inform website allows people to check the status of their second appointment. If it is more than eight weeks from the first, another slot can be booked if there is one available. The national helpline can also be used, and drop-in clinics are being set-up around the country. VACCINE

VOLUNTEERING

Inspiring Volunteering Awards 2021: As part of our Volunteer’s Week 2021 celebrations, we held The Inspiring Volunteering Awards ceremony online on 3rd June. It was attended by around 50 people, with afternoon teas for all the finalists and their nominators. The Inspiring Volunteering Awards ceremony was very different to past years but nonetheless it was still filled with appreciation and admiration for East Lothian’s volunteers. You can read more about all our nominees and winners here.

FUNDING

Drug Harm: The First Minister announced a new national mission to reduce drug related deaths and harms in January 2021. This is supported by an investment of £50 million per year for the next five years. We are making £18 million of this available through four funds. These funds will be available for this year, and the next four years. Therefore, multi-year applications are welcome. These are:

  • Service Improvement Fund: £5 million has been allocated to continue the Improvement Fund, launched earlier this year. To provide improved services for outreach, treatment, rehabilitation and after care

  • Local Support Fund: £5 million has been allocated to continue the Grassroots Fund, launched earlier this year. To provide access to funding for a wide range of communities and grassroots organisations which support the aims of the national mission

  • Recovery Fund: £5 million has been allocated to support access to residential rehabilitation by providing additional residential rehabilitation capacity, support people to access residential rehabilitation and support people after they leave residential rehabilitation

  • Children and Families Fund: £3 million has been allocated to improve support for children, young people and families impacted by drug use, and ensure all children, young people and families have access to services

These funds are accessible by not-for-profit organisations working in the drugs sector, including Integration Authorities, Alcohol and Drug Partnerships, third sector organisations and grassroots/community organisations. Multi-year funding is available, and applications will be accepted and grants awarded on a rolling basis. MELDAP, our local drug and alcohol partnership has a coordinating role. Please let them know if you are applying meldap@eastlothian.gov They also suggest that applicants consider collaborative approaches with other services and partner organisations.
