Our Community Kitchen Volunteers
Elly Robertson started volunteering with Our Community Kitchen in Haddington in January 2020. Her role is in the kitchen helping with preparation of food and washing up. She loves meeting new folk and encourages anyone thinking of volunteering to just ‘Do it!’
Ian Stevenson started volunteering in September 2019. I prepare vegetables each Tuesday and deliver frozen food locally. ‘On Wednesdays and Fridays I help set up the table, serve food, chat with our participants and clear/wash up. I started volunteering as I wanted to work in a role in a catering environment. I enjoy working as part of a team. It helps me to meet new people and doing a variety of tasks including supporting others. Working in a front facing role can sometimes be challenging but with practise it becomes much easier. Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, it will get you out of the house and involved in the community.
Sally Greenshields started volunteering 10th June 2021 helping in the kitchen. She started volunteering after Covid. ‘At the start of the second lockdown I wanted to help the elderly but I couldn’t because I was vulnerable and covid was getting bad. When I heard about OCK I thought it was a great opportunity! I love seeing everyone happy and working together for the people who come to OCK. I also love having chats with everyone and baking for everyone. People thinking about volunteering should just go for it as it's a great experience and you make good friendships with everyone.’
Alison Reynold started volunteering in March 2018 and is now both a Volunteer Treasurer and and Trustee. In this role she helps steer the direction of the charity as well as helping keep their finances in check. ‘I enjoy the friendships, support, and being part of an extended family. I have my own mobility issues and volunteering on a daily basis can be challenging but nothing that can't be overcome as we support each other’.
